Inishcoo House is a beautifully restored 18C coastguard house standing alone on an uninhabited island just 5 minutes boat ride from the fishing village of Burtonport on the mainland. The island features several glorious sand beaches, a shipwreck, an inland lake and unlimited walking, fishing, boating and swimming possibilities. The house is an eco-house, and warm and cosy all year round, with air-conditioning if needed in the summer. It has 6 double bedrooms and one single (or cot) room. The very large contemporary family room/kitchen opening on to the south-facing terrace is the heart of the house, right next to the ferries navigating Rutland Sound to and from Arranmore Island. Across the hall is a peaceful and comfortable library stocked with books and family games. There is also a large playroom which adapts as a downstairs bedroom. The house and surrounding land are completely enclosed and safe for wandering children. Beyond that is another 6 acres of private grounds enclosed on three sides by fine old stone walls where older and supervised younger children can play among the wild flowers and boulders. Within the grounds stands an old stone watch hut from which coastguards have observed the bay for centuries and where our guests can do the same today in complete peace and seclusion.
Oscar Duffy is our friendly caretaker and he is on hand throughout your holiday. He is also available to ferry guests to Burtonport or on boating trips around the islands.
Many of our guests enjoy the island so much that they only visit the mainland once or twice a week to do the shopping. There are three excellent supermarkets in nearby Dungloe, 10 minutes drive from Burtonport, with local fish and vegetable markets on various days. But for those that do want to explore Donegal, some of the wildest and most beautiful scenery in Ireland awaits them. Mountain ranges, deep lakes, the tallest cliffs in Europe, mile-long sandy beaches, legendary links golf courses, old pubs (many with gaelic music): everything is here to make this holiday completely unique. The weather is often surprisingly hot and sunny thanks to the gulf stream, and of course it can also be fierce and wet, but it will always be an experience and usually liable to change within the next half hour!
Besides a Visitors Centre explaining all its rich history, Burtonport also has an excellent and friendly pub/restaurant - The Lobster Pot - which is owned and run by Tim and Anne who will cater to your needs should you want your freezer stocked in advance with tasty dishes or sent over on the day with Oscar. Fresh catches of lobster, fish and crab are always available.
Inishcoo is a captivating house in an unspoilt and very beautiful corner of Ireland. It is ideal for large families or groups of friends, and with an unlimited number of activities available, it can be an unforgettable venue for a seminar or team-building event. Or it can just be your own private retreat to recharge batteries and escape from the world for a few magical days.
Come to Inishcoo and discover Donegal’s special magic.
